The following Dive Site links are relevant to SCUBA Diving around Northern
California with some links to agencies and other sites of general SCUBA interest
thrown in for free. Look for other SCUBA sites through a search engine such as
Yahoo or
Google
Agencies
- DAN (Divers Alert Network) must top
the list. Look for e-mail response to your unique medical diving question.
- PADI is the worlds largest training
agency with a glossy and rich web site including the PADI Travel Network
- The NAUI page has a good idea in their
"reading room". Lists only a few instructors in Northern California.
- The YMCA was
one of the first SCUBA training agencies and they're still around. Lots of other
aquatic programs too.
- Though they have nothing to do with Northern California, try the
British Sub-Aqua Club
for a different slant on training. They do it all in clubs with some pretty
tough standards !
- Parle vous Francais ? You don't really need to when visiting the
CMAS site. This is the large international
training organization from the French. Bon voyage !
Marine
Resources
- To get above it all or beneath it all, try the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) Your tax dollars at work.
- More interesting than NOAA is the National
Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) where you'll find information relating to
marine life and neat color maps of worldwide sea temperature changes.
- For a bit of Academia, try Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution which is a good gateway to academic stuff on
marine life.
- Another marine academic tool is the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography - a part of the University of California at San
Diego. Check out the "DATA ZOO" to look at enough data to make your
eyes like a squid's!
Monterey Bay
- Before you go diving at Monterey, check the
Tide Tables to
plan your dive accordingly - through 1999!
- The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research
Institute (MBARI) offers much information concerning Northern California
waterways and ocean life including the provocative question "Where is Pt.
Lobos?". The answer will surprise you.
- The mother site of the Monterey Bay
Aquarium provides photos and text of your visit as well as access to the
bookstore. This site also is a good gateway to other WWW aquarium links.
- Monterey divers know to stay outside the boundaries of the
Hopkins Marine Laboratory Station
just south of the Aquarium. You can check out the boundaries for yourself and
apply for a permit to dive within their waters!
Miscellaneous &
Fun
- We think we have some great underwater photographs here, but try
Underwater Photography for a large collection of beautiful work.
- If you're a seasoned diver, visit the
Old Farts Diving Association
(OFDA) and sign up for a membership card
- The Smithsonian
Ocean Planet Exhibition is online and a wonderful education tool - much
better than the CD-ROM version.
- Maybe the best general purpose site is AQUANAUT
which provides extensive links to a bunch of general diving resources.
